The First Date
Friday, March 7th, 2008We all have to start somewhere and this is as true of the dating game as anything else in life. The first date could be the beginning of a great relationship if handled properly. This initial dating experience is really a first impression of what the future relationship might be; the two people involved will either see potential or call it a day and keep looking. No matter how much you want the first date to work out well, try to be yourself. Of course, we all try to give the best impression of ourselves and that is fine, just do not try to change yourself into someone you are not.
Remember, it is rude to be late and is disrespectful to the person you are hoping to form a relationship with. If your date is meeting you from home, be ready and do not keep them waiting. This may seem very old fashioned, but basic good manners go a long way in creating a good first impression.
How you look is also an indication of how highly you regard one another. Even if you are going to a casual venue make sure that your clothes are of good quality and are clean. It should be obvious to everyone that you took the trouble to be well groomed, for there is nothing more off putting than a slovenly or ill kempt appearance. A hint of perfume for a girl or aftershave for a boy will certainly be appreciated.
Keep your conversation light; it really is not necessary to probe too deeply into a person’s background on the first date. On the other hand, do not give the impression that you are not bothered; just do your best to get the balance right. Appear interested enough to ask about work, parents, siblings and hobbies. The rest will follow naturally and the ice will quickly be broken.
